We are very dedicated to performance recording as we can see the
genetic advantages that can be gained by having a good program in
place and by the use of the latest technology available. We have
been performance recording since 1984 and have used LAMPLAN (the
worlds leading sheep genetic evaluation system) since its inception.

Our management program is as follows:
1st two weeks of February
Adult weights are taken on 450 stud ewes and 400 1 ½ year
ewes. We then select top 35 ewes from both the Oaklea and Cashmore
Park studs for a joint embryo transfer program. We select, based
on their performance to date, the next top 450 ewes to remain in
the stud.
Ram lambs are measured for weight, fat and muscle depth, testicle
size and individual faecal samples are taken to measure the number
of worm eggs present. Rams are also selected for their suitability
to be used in the stud. Ewe lambs are weighed.
All the above information is sent to LAMBPLAN for the 15th February
run.
14th February
Teasers in with ewes and candidate ewes prepared for artificial
insemination.
25th February
Mating allocations are done using a computer program known as TGRM.
This program allocates the sires to ewes to give us the greatest
genetic gain whist minimising inbreeding.
28th February
Rams go out with ewes and a.i. is done a couple of days later.
22nd March
Rams are taken out the ewes so that they can then be used at Cashmore
Park. Cover up rams with harnesses are put in the ewes two days
later.
28th March
Ewe lambs are measured for weight, fat and muscle depth and faecal
egg counts. A TGRM run is also carried out at this time and these
ewes are mated from the 1st April to 30th April.
9th May
Ewes pregnancy scanned for empties singles twins and triplets.
13th June
Ewe lambs shorn and fleece and body weights recorded.
17th June
Ewe lambs and late lambers pregnancy scanned.
25th July
Ram lambs shorn and fleece and body weights recorded.
28th July
Lambing commences. All lambs are tagged and weighed at birth and
their sire and dam and birth type is recorded. All lamb deaths and
any dry ewes are also recorded. Information is sent to LAMBPLAN
every two weeks.
28th October
Lambs from mature ewes are weaned and weighed.
28th November
Lambs from ewe lambs are weaned and weighed.
Mid December
Lambs are shorn and 30% of ram lambs are culled on their performance
to date.
